Coffee Grind Guide: Which One to Choose?
Whole Beans (Recommended)
- What is it? Unprocessed coffee beans that you grind yourself.
- Equipment Needed: A coffee grinder (manual or electric) and your preferred brewing device.
- Why Choose It? Best for flavour and Control. As coffee ages, you will need to adjust the grind size to be finer. This can only be accomplished when you grind your own coffee beans.
Espresso Grind
- What is it? A very fine grind, almost like powdered sugar.
- Equipment Needed: An espresso machine or a stovetop espresso maker (Moka pot).
- Why Choose It? Perfect for use with an espresso machine when you don't have your own grinder. As the coffee ages, you may need to adjust the amount of coffee you put in the group head to ensure the right volume of coffee is extracted.
Plunger/Filter
- What is it? A medium-coarse grind, like rough sand.
- Equipment Needed: A French press (plunger) or a drip coffee maker (like a standard coffee machine).
- Why Choose It? This pre-ground option, is designed for use with a plunger or filter extraction device when you don't have your own grinder.
Stovetop
- What is it? A grind that’s slightly coarser than espresso, but finer than filter coffee.
- Equipment Needed: A Moka pot (a small metal coffee brewer used on the stove).
- Why Choose It? Pre-ground coffee for use with a stovetop/moka pot method especially when you don't have your own coffee grinder.
